Accomplishments
For more than 15 years, Michigan and much of the world has realized that solid waste – garbage – is a regional issue. Prior to that, virtually every community had a “dump” that was often environmentally unsound. Passage of legislation in the 1980s forced the closing of hundreds of dumps across Michigan and the siting of large, environmentally safe regional landfills.
Michigan’s waste management industry has evolved in response to these changes. The industry continues to invest in research and state-of-the-art technologies designed to maintain the industry’s long-standing tradition of dealing with society’s waste needs. This includes the development of more efficient, effective and environmentally protective means of waste disposal. The industry is also engaged with policymakers, industry and citizens to encourage greater recycling
The MWIA has worked to act as a strong resource for its member companies, providing solid representation on policy and legislative issues. The MWIA also offers public information and advocacy on behalf of its member companies and has, to date, been very effective in its efforts to offer responsible policy solutions to the Michigan Legislature and others.
